Chinese Bridge, Stowe – Buckinghamshire
Job Title
Chinese Bridge, Stowe
Client
The National Trust
Description
Stowe Landscape Gardens is an internationally important garden containing more than 40 listed structures. The National Trust are in the process of re-stoning the original circular walk around the gardens which required the replication of an original wooden bridge (known as the Chinese Bridge) which once spanned the southern end of the Worthies River to complete the circular walk around Octagon Lake.
The footbridge is designed to replicate the earlier historic bridge and to have foundations constructed below water to avoid any visual distraction from the bridge. The foundations were constructed in two metre depth of water and silt using concrete caissons placed to support the timber posts of the bridge. The result is a stunning bridge that gives the appearance of floating on the water.
